Project update for 2011

During the year we had 5 new members join the group; two new members for Lineage #2, two members for Lineage #4, and an additional member for the separate lineage section.

The results and discussion sections of the website have now been updated with the inclusion of the new members.

In case anyone was thinking of a marker upgrade, FTDNA has an end of year promotion with reduced prices until 31 December.

Articles on Roche history

Two articles on Roche history have been added to the “brief history” page on Roche Lineages. The material in the articles were originally on Jim Roache’s website, however this site is no longer active. Jim’s website had an extensive amount of Roche historical material and two edited articles are now available:

1. Cambro – Irish Timeline (53 pages)

2. Roch in Wales and Operation Ireland (27 pages)

In the future more edited articles from Jim Roache’s original website may be available on Roche Lineages.

New members / July – August 2010

We have had some new members join the project in the last 2 months:

#169230 Roach (haplogroup E)
#29213 Rocha (haplogroup R1b1b2)
#N88072 Roache (haplogroup E1b1b1)

and

#187167 Roche (new order Y-37)

New member #N88072 Roache is a close match with the main E1b1b1 group and is related to the founding ancestor for this lineage. The other 2 members do not match any other project members at this stage.

In addition I have explored some other DNA testing companies for Roache entries on their databases; the main two are:

Ancestry DNA

(they have 7 Roche/Roach entries; 4 R1b, and 1 each for E1b1b1, I2b, and I1).

Ancestry DNA allows you to set up a free account and input your Y-DNA results. Once this is done you are able to search the database for DNA matches. The link is at the bottom of their home page. I have done this for my results and found that the E1b1b1 entry is a close match for our main E1b1b1 group and is related to the founding ancestor for this lineage.

Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMFG)

(they have 4 Roche/Roach entries)

The access is similar to the Ancestry DNA situation; set up a free account and input your Y-DNA results. I have also done this for my results and found that one of the four entries was a close match for our E1b1b1 group.

If anyone decides to search these databases and finds a close match, please let me know. We could then add this additional information to our lineage chart.

restoration work at Pill Priory

Pill Priory is a Tironian House located near Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire, Wales. It was founded by Adam de Roche in ~1200. At a somewhat later date, the Roche family founded a further daughter house on their lands at Glascarreg, Co. Wexford, Ireland. Adam’s possessions were very extensive; his dominium included churches in Steynton, Saint Kewit (Cewydd), St Mary of Rupe (Roche), St David of Newcastle and St Nicholas of New Mote.

The current owners of Pill Priory are undertaking restoration work on the property; some recent photos of the restoration can be viewed on their web-site:

Family Trees of DNA project members

The lineage chart (Lineage results section, PDF document) contains some limited information on the most distant known ancestor for some of our members. It would probably be useful to list some additional information on the various family trees so that possible connections may be recognized.

I have added a “comment” to this blog as an example; it lists some basic information on the 3 most distant generations for my family tree. DNA Project members are encouraged to add their own family tree information, as a separate comment to this post.

If any visitors to this section recognize a family tree connection, or have some information that may be relevant, please leave a comment for the specific family tree of the project member.

Lineage results

One of the notable features of the results is the diversity of ancestral lines within the group; there are currently 19 separate ancestral lines which have acquired the surname independently from each other. This corresponds to 19 unrelated individuals who have founded a Roche family line from approximately 1200 AD onwards. Of the 19 separate ancestral lines, there is one major lineage which comprises approximately 25% of Roche families, and 2 minor lineages. In addition there are 2 possible lineages which require confirmation by the upgrading of markers to either 25 or 37.

Any comments, questions or discussion on the current results are most welcome.

A warm welcome to all group members and everyone from the wider Roche / Roach community. In addition there may be others interested in the ancestry of this surname group and some of the family connections that have been revealed.

One of the advantages of using the wordpress site for “Roche Lineages” are the communication tools such as this blog and other networking functions. Therefore the blog may assist with developing further connections between family groups who are interested in exploring their ancestry.

Over time various topics will be posted and comments or discussion will be most welcome. In addition, if anyone has suggestions for discussion topics, please feel free to mention them here in the “comment” section. Also if any one wishes to post a particular topic, please email the material to me and it will be posted.

In the next day or so, I will post a topic on the recent Lineage results. In the mean time, general comments, questions or suggestions on “Roche Lineages” are very welcome.
